In the shop, I am partial to using traditional tools and methods. At left, I am using a drawknife while seated at a shaving horse. My shaving horse, pictured above, is simply a bench equipped with a foot-operated clamp. This piece of equipment was used for centuries before the vise-equipped workbench first appeared. |
Chopping a slat mortise into the rear post of a post-and-rung ladderback chair. |
Inspecting the side panel of a post-and-rung ladderback chair. |

Cutting a dovetail joint for a drawer. |
Using a gouge to shape the exterior of a willow bowl. |
Like I said, simple hand tools are what I enjoy most, but it's hard to avoid some machine-aided woodworking. The machines get the job done effectively, but they are noisy, and they sure do make a mess. Note the protective headgear. |
